KP govt to launch ‘Sheen Pekhawar’ plantation drive

PESHAWAR— The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to launch a mega plantation drive ‘Sheen Pekhawar’ to make the provincial capital clean and green.

Peshawar, once known as the city of flowers, is ranked the world second most populated city in the world in 2016, according to the World Health Organization.

Under the initiative, the KP Local Government Department will planted saplings on various vacant government land, plots in provincial capital and efforts will be taken to establish public parks on vacant places. Furthermore, the government identified sites for plantation in the provincial capital.

With this, plantation, the officials said, will be done at other suitable places including the roadsides, intersections of Peshawar and important historical places. According to sources, all the provincial government has issued directions to the Peshawar Development Authority and in-charge of horticulture units of the tehsil municipal administration.

To make younger generation an active partner of the campaign for planting more and more trees, students of schools, colleges and universities will also be made a part of the Sheen Pekhawar drive so as to create closeness with plants in future generations

It is to be noted that even before this, several campaigns were launched under the names of “Clean and Green Peshawar” and “City of Flowers Peshawar” on which millions of rupees were spent by the Peshawar Development Authority (PDA) were spent.

The last government (2013-18) had launched the Billion Tree Tsunami Afforestation Programme, which was highly appreciated globally due to increasing green cover of the province. In 2019, the current federal government replicated the programme to plant 10 billion trees by 2023.

A recent study by the Germanwatch titled ‘Global Climate Risk Index 2021’ has placed Pakistan on the 8th position on the list of countries most vulnerable to climate change in its annual report for 2020.
