PESHAWAR— Speakers at a seminar on human rights called for effective measures to protect rights of the marginalized community in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The seminar was organized by the Peace Justice & Youth Organization in collaboration with Khwendo kor and TransAction here at Peshawar on Thursday.
The participants urged the provincial government to legislate for transgender community inclusive laws.
Taimur Kamal, Coordinator, Pakhtunkhwa Civil Society Network said “Despite the international commitments and signatory of International conventions and UDHR, transgender persons in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continue to face discrimination and are denied their fundamental freedoms, not being provided with equal opportunities in accessing public services etc.
Farzana Jan, President TransAction Pakistan said “On International Human Rights Day where world celebrates human rights and in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa we are still facing number of challenges which is not only limited to violence and torture but also includes discriminatory behavior by Government in public services and in terms of opportunities”.
Dr. Sarfaraz a prominent Educationist from Academia said” Academia is fully committed to bring a positive change and therefore our struggle continue to sensitize youth on the issues of Transgender persons and we undertake researches on different issues of transgender persons in order to provide effective recommendations for Government in promoting inclusive services”.
Speaking at the Seminar, Ms. Rabia Basri, Member Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly said” Our Government is fully committed and dedicated to uphold the rights of marginalized communities and therefore we had already took number of initiatives for transgender specifically and many projects are pipelined and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly will ensure inclusive legislations as Transgender Persons are the important part of our society and are most importantly Humans and citizens of Pakistan”.
The seminar also attended by large number of lawyers and members of Provincial Assembly, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ms. Rehana Ismail of the MMA, Ms. Kashmala of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf and Media persons.
